About the Photo Series: This series, Terra Nullius, started to develop in 2016, shortly after finding out that I was to become a father. I wanted to create a playful and comforting world for my future daughter. While reading on child development, I came across an article on Donald Winnicott's "Transitional Object" (or comfort object) which is an item used to provide psychological comfort, especially in unusual or unique situations. This often comes in the form of a blanket. I use blankets as a universal symbol for a time of innocence, creating a world that everyone could relate to and feel safe in.
This series involves setting up objects as ephemeral sculpture, under a natural sky. These images are not digital composites. The exploration of these spaces is a huge part of my process, with the natural sky providing an element of chance. Once the sculpture is actually set up, taking the picture is much like shooting a traditional natural landscape.
